Chapter 13

(JEREMY)

WHEN my phone rings at almost nine o’clock, I nearly break my neck trying to get to it. I haven’t talked to Beck all day, and when I looked for him after wrestling practice he was nowhere to be found.

Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but I’m beginning to wonder if he’s having second thoughts again. I don’t know if my heart can take any more of this back and forth. I’ve already got emotional whiplash.

When I see that the incoming call is from him, I work to slow my breathing and sound casual. “Hello, senpai.”

“Stop calling me that,” he growls.

Seth looks up from his sketch pad and gives me a smiley thumbs-up.

“Beck, you have no sense of humor.” I flop down onto my bed with a pout that he can’t see. “So where did you disappear to after wrestling?”

“I had to get away. Some hot guy has been wearing these insanely sexy jock straps in the locker room. He was wearing a yellow one today, and I was afraid I was going to jump him right there in front of everyone.”

“Really?” I can’t help but smile.

“Yeah, really. You can’t keep doing that, Jeremy. It’s not easy for me to… not look. And if I look, something is going to happen.”

“You mean you’re going to get hard?” I ask, baiting him on purpose.

Seth snatches his head up and stares at me with his mouth hanging open. “Sorry,” I whisper, covering the mouthpiece.

Beck doesn’t answer. Even through the phone, I can sense his exasperation.

“Okay,” I sigh. “I’ll stop. Only plain white jock straps from now on, or compression shorts. And I’ll dress and undress quickly, so as not to call attention to my awesomely hot body.”

“Thank you,” he says. “And besides, you don’t know who else might be looking. That guy Chris seems to be getting his eyes full. I’m about ready to body slam that motherfucker.”

“Nah, he’s just trying to get me to tutor him, and we haven’t been able to set up a time yet.”

“Private lessons, huh?” Beck laughs. “You know there’s a rule that the team captain has to be present at all tutoring sessions involving freshmen, right?”

“Crap. I didn’t know that.”

“That’s because I just created that rule. And it only applies to freshmen named Jeremy.”

“Uh-oh, someone’s jealous.”

“Hell, yes.” Beck says. “And don’t you forget it.”

His voice gets distant, and I hear him mumble something to someone before he continues our conversation. “So Jeremy, how would you like to go on a vacation with me and Truck and some other people? We’ve gotten access to a mountain house for the weekend.”

“Are you serious?” I yell, unable to contain my excitement. “That sounds so amazing! I’ve never been on a vacation before.”

“Never?”

“Yeah. I mean I’ve been on a few school trips with the wrestling team and stuff, but not anything major like going to the mountains.” I know I’m making myself sound pathetic, but I can’t seem to help it. It’s the truth, after all.

“Well, I’d be honored to take you on your very first real vacation.
